Item #: 974 Rare Shoulder Belt Plate This is a Buckle that was made ca. 1847 - 1858 as in American Military Belt Plate By Michael J. O’Donnell & J. Duncan Campbell. If you look on page 464, plates 780 & 781 you will see how this one was made. It started with four rings soldered to the back, they were cut off ( this was done at Horstmann ) & a pin put on, like plate 781 to replace them. This must have worked better for cleaning & if you were in the Army As I was, you know how much you had to clean your stuff, any bit of free time you were cleaning & you can see where this would work a lot better with getting this on & off without the four rings. It is also marked with "HORSTMANN/PHILa". The 6th New York Militia had some made & I would also think that the 5th could have also have done the same. This is the only nondug one I have seen that was Pre-Civil War & that was not late. Most of this type of plate has come out of New York Camp in Va. This is a nice an rare plate to have, you never see them for sell Dug or nondug. There must have only been a small lot made. I also have a Photo of a Group of New York Militia in the feild & they all have this type of plate of there crossbelt. A rare plaet at a super price. Again you never see marked crossbelt plates like this & I would say with about 98% that this is from a New Your Enlisted man.
