Abercrombie & Fitch’s sordid past was just (re)examined in Netflix documentary White Hot: The Rise and Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch, reminding us why the Oughts mall staple has become so hated. But good the documentary touches on the brand’s current position, it fails to mention a startling, even controversial, truth about Abercrombie & Fitch in 2022: it could be cool again.
Is Abercrombie & Fitch cool again?
As the new documentary explains, much of Abercrombie’s problematic branding (and behavior) can be traced to his former leadership. But after years of problematic choices and bigoted pronouncements, Abercrombie CEO Mike Jeffries resigned in 2014. He was replaced by current Abercrombie CEO Fran Horowitz, who apparently completely overhauled the image. , marketing and brand appearance.
The new Abercrombie has done away with its controversial (read: racist) slogan tees, non-inclusive waistline and frat boy looks in favor of minimal basics, casual ’90s inspiration and affordable upgrades for your office and going out wardrobes. The moose logo and popped collars of the past have been replaced with loose fitting hoodies in soft colors, versatile summer dresses and even knit polo shirts worthy of Don Draper’s dressing room.
But these sleek new pieces aren’t the only reason for Abercrombie’s comeback. The brand has also turned to social media marketing (particularly on TikTok) where sponsored ads have led to organic trends. Last year, #abercrombiehaul and #abercrombiestyle were regular TikTok hashtags under videos of young fashion influencers reviewing – and to like — New arrivals from Abercrombie & Fitch.
Further evidence of the brand’s new path can be seen on Abercrombie’s website, which (at the time of this writing) leads sharply a-Abercrombie-the style motto: “Today, and every day, we lead with purpose, championing inclusivity and creating a sense of belonging.”
Not only is Abercrombie cool again, but it’s also for the first time, surprisingly progressive.
