Small jewelry brand worn by Doja Cat, K-pop stars accuse Forever 21 of “stealing” creations: “It’s pathetic”

A small business based in New York jewelry company accused Forever 21 of “stealing” one of its Necklace designs.

According to OHT, which published the allegations on instagram on September 23, the brand had been selling its Pearl Cross necklace since January 2021. instagram the post included a screenshot of a Forever 21 post for a “cross pendant faux pearl necklace,” which appears to have since been dismantled on the official Forever 21 website.

In The Know has contacted Forever 21 for comment and has not heard back at the time of writing.

“Our team spent hours brainstorming, perfecting, and bringing this design to life,” OHT wrote. “It’s sad to see our design, which we started doing by hand in New York for nearly two years, reduced to a mass-produced copy, most likely made unethically and quickly. fashion clandestine workshops.

OHT was founded by Jinsol Woo who wanted to design pieces that anyone could wear regardless of gender or stereotypes.

“I created my brand in order to appeal to everyone, no matter how you identify and express yourself”, woo said teen vogue in a May interview. “I don’t want to impose labels on people, so why label the pieces I create?”

The brand has since flourished and is considered a favorite of K-pop idols.

Forever 21 is afashion brand, which refers to retailers who design items quickly and cheaply in order to sell them at low prices and mass-produce items to keep up with accelerating fashion trends.

Of course, youa site that rates fashion brands on their ethical practices, reported in 2021 that Forever 21 is not transparent about its impact on the environment and describes its working conditions as “very poor”.

“We first learned about the design from customers, who sent us photos [and] videos after discovering the necklaces in stores and online,” OHT Executive Director Lin Ye told In The Know. “As a small business in New York, and with all of our products handcrafted in our office by our small team, and many of our valued friends, families, and celebrity clients wearing the necklaces at events that are our best- sellers, it definitely hurt us.”

Ye provided In The Know with screenshots comparing two other OHT designs with those sold by Forever 21.

Ye also pointed out that founder Woo’s history and dedication to the brand — especially during COVID — highlights how unfair it is to see similar designs selling for less at Forever 21.

“Jin has also amassed a huge number of followers on social media, go viral for her story and of Korean descent, speaking no English and having less than $20 in his pocket,” Ye said. “His life has been tough, to say the least, and until the middle of COVID, Jin was a bartender every day until 5 a.m. to help fund his business. He is the hardest worker I have ever met.

The OHT legend caught the eye of rapper Doja Cat, who has already worn pieces of the brand.

“Stop f****** stealing from small businesses, it’s pathetic”, Doja Cat tweeted to his 5.4 million followers, tagging Forever 21. “These people are my friends and you just leech. Do better how f****** embarrassing.

According to Ye, Doja Cat owns the entire collection of OHT and was never paid to wear the products.

“All we really want is Forever 21 to make a genuine apology and take responsibility,” Ye concluded.
